Have Migraines? Here's How Massage Can Help

Affecting approximately 10% of the global population, the precise cause of migraines remains unidentified.

While medication is a popular method for preventing and treating migraine headaches, certain studies indicate that massage therapy could be beneficial for certain individuals. This is particularly encouraging for those who experience difficulties with the side effects of migraine medications.

Before discontinuing your headache medication, it's important to note that there isn't sufficient data to confirm its effectiveness. This is why massage therapy is not included in the official treatment guidelines for migraines by the American Headache Society, a group of healthcare professionals focusing on head and facial pain.

However, what we can confirm is that there is promising scientific evidence specific to migraines. Numerous small studies have been connecting massage to migraine relief for many years. Additionally, there is a wealth of high-quality research demonstrating that massage therapy can alleviate common migraine triggers such as stress and sleep issues.

What the Science Shows

Massage therapy for alleviating migraines is not a recent concept. The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) provides a training course for its members to understand migraines and the benefits of massage in managing them. Additionally, some leading physicians advocate for the use of massage therapy in treating migraines.

Take a glimpse at some of the studies indicating that massage therapy may be a beneficial treatment for migraines.

Massage therapy may reduce migraine pain and improve quality of life.

In a study conducted in the United States involving individuals with migraines, 26 participants were divided into two groups. One group, the control group, did not receive any intervention, whereas the other group, which received massages, underwent two sessions per week for a duration of 5 weeks. The group that received massages showed significantly more positive outcomes, as indicated by their reports:

  • Much less migraine pain

  • More headache-free days

  • Fewer sleep problems

  • Higher levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin

Types of Massage for Migraine Relief

Massage therapy can range from being calming to invigorating. It may involve the use of hot or cold stones and can target either your feet or provide relief for tension in your upper body.

Is there a specific type of massage that is more effective than others for relieving headaches? Although what works best can vary from person to person. The most suitable massage for managing your migraines will be determined by your preferences, triggers, and the outcomes you experience.

As you think about your options, consider this list of massage types that have some published science to support their use.

Massage combining traditional and aromatherapy techniques.

Conventional massage can aid in reducing anxiety and enhancing relaxation. Incorporating aromatherapy, with the addition of essential oils by the therapist, can further enhance the experience. Studies indicate that lavender essential oil is effective in alleviating stress and improving sleep quality. Additionally, research suggests that lavender aromatherapy may help alleviate symptoms of migraines.

It is important to remember that even though essential oils are perceived as natural and harmless, they can also have adverse effects. Certain oils may induce headaches or other reactions in individuals who are sensitive to strong scents.

Trigger point massage.

Head and neck trigger-point massage can provide relief for some individuals experiencing headaches. The concept is based on the theory that issues in the skeletal muscle can cause pain to radiate to the head. By releasing tension in these muscles, chronic headaches can be alleviated.

Although research on trigger point massage for migraines is scarce, it shows promise. A study revealed that combining trigger point therapy with medication was notably more effective in providing relief for migraines compared to using medication alone.

The Best Time to Get a Massage for Migraine

If you are unable to commit to a regular massage therapy program due to time or financial constraints but still want to alleviate the effects of migraines, the alternative is to opt for massage therapy as soon as you notice the onset of a migraine, or even while experiencing one. According to the AMTA, early intervention may help prevent a severe migraine attack. If you are already experiencing intense pain, studies indicate that massage therapy could help alleviate the discomfort.
